Embarking on a new chapter of life can be both exhilarating and daunting. In 2017, at the age of 25, I decided to leave behind my cozy hometown in northwest Ohio and set my sights on the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Moving over 600 miles away to a completely unfamiliar place was a bold leap of faith, but little did I know that this adventure would shape me in unimaginable ways.

In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my personal experiences, the challenges I faced, and the countless joys I discovered while building a new life in a bustling metropolis.

When I moved to Atlanta, My car was filled with all my personal belongings. Trunk and backseat were completely full!

What’s it like moving to a new city alone?

Moving to a new city alone can be both exciting and daunting. It’s an opportunity to start fresh, explore new places, and meet new people. However, it can also be challenging to adjust to a new environment without the support of friends or family.

Before moving, it’s important to plan and research your new city. Consider cost of living, job opportunities, transportation, and safety. This will help you understand what to expect and make informed decisions about where to live and how to get around.

Once you have a better idea of what your new city offers, it’s time to start making a plan. Think about what you want to achieve and how to make the most of your new surroundings.

Whether you plan on exploring local attractions, joining clubs or groups, or simply taking a walk to get to know your neighborhood, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your new city.

Preparing for the Move

Moving to a new city alone can be both exciting and challenging. It’s important to prepare well in advance to make the process smoother. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the move.

Researching the City

Before moving to a new city, it’s important to research the different neighborhoods to find the one that best fits your needs.

Look for safe, affordable neighborhoods with good amenities such as parks, restaurants, and shops.

You can use online resources such as NeighborhoodScout and Niche to compare different neighborhoods.

If you’re moving for work, research the job market in the city to find out about job opportunities and salaries.

You can use websites such as Indeed and Glassdoor to search for jobs and get an idea of the salaries in different industries.

Find Temporary Housing

If you can find a temporary living situation first, please do so. I found an Airbnb that I lived in for about 2 months.

If I remember correctly, long-term stays were relatively new on Airbnb back in 2017. These days, they offer discounts if you stay for 30 days or longer!

I will say that it was quite expensive, so definitely look around for the best deal.

I was living in the lowest level of the host’s townhouse. I had a bedroom, a small living room, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. There was enough in the kitchen for me to make eggs and toast for breakfast, and a small fridge for drinks and dairy products.

They also provided internet and streaming services on a Smart TV. They were also cool with me temporarily forwarding my mail to their address while I was staying in their townhouse.

So while it was expensive, it was nice for me to have furniture, WiFi, and a safe place to sleep and park my car.

I also felt like 2 months was plenty of time for me to explore different neighborhoods, and make sure that moving to Atlanta was a good decision. I was also able to find a reliable roommate and look at apartments together!

Planning the Move

Once you’ve decided on the neighborhood and job, it’s time to plan the move. Start by creating a budget for the move, including the cost of hiring movers or renting a truck.

You can use online resources such as Moving.com to get an estimate of the cost of moving.

Next, start packing well in advance. Begin with non-essential items such as books and decor, and label each box clearly to make unpacking easier. You can use a packing list to ensure you don’t forget anything important.

If you’re starting a new job, make sure to give yourself enough time to settle in before starting work. You may need to take time off to unpack and get settled, so plan accordingly.

Finally, make sure to notify all relevant parties of your relocation, including your bank, utility companies, and the post office. You can use a moving checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything important.

By researching the city and planning the move well in advance, you can make the process of moving to a new city alone much smoother.
